Description
Brighty was a real live burn who lived in the Grand Canyon. He is believed to have been brought down the Colorado River 1890-1892 by a person who drowned. Brighty spent the next 30 years carrying loads and passengers up & down the Bright Angel Trail in return for food. No one ever owned him. If payment was not satisfactory, he would just leave and go to elsewhere. He became famous when US President Roosevelt used him to hunt mountain lions. On his trips he hobnobbed with mapmakers, artists and geologists and soon they were following his trail from rim to river.
